SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
In today’s Gospel passage Jesus is not saying, “If you want to be happy,
be poor, be hungry, weep, be hated and insulted.” He is not prescribing
various routines or practices as so many “happiness pills.” Rather,
Jesus is stating that those who direct their lives toward certain goals
will, as a consequence, experience genuine happiness. We must remember
Our Lord’s promise that he alone is the Way.
|

And raising his eyes toward his disciples
he said: "Blessed are you who are poor, for the kingdom of God is yours.
Blessed are you who are now hungry, for you will be satisfied. Blessed are
you who are now weeping, for you will laugh." - Lk 6:20-21
‘THE LIGHT IS ON FOR YOU’
“The Light is on for
You” is a pastoral initiative, encouraging local Catholics to receive
the Sacrament of Reconciliation during Lent. Beginning with the first
Wednesday of Lent, Feb. 28, through Wednesday of Holy Week, April 4,
Confessions will be available in every parish church in the archdiocese
on Wednesdays during Lent from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
To promote the
initiative, the archdiocese is placing ads on Metro cars and buses in
Maryland and the District of Columbia. The campaign will also include a
billboard in the Waldorf area and radios ads.
Archbishop Donald
Wuerl’s first pastoral letter as Washington’s archbishop deals with
“God’s Mercy and the Sacrament of Penance.” To people who have not been
to confession in awhile, Archbishop Wuerl says, “Why carry all that
excess baggage when you don’t have to?”
The pastoral program
accompanying the letter will include religious education materials for
adults, young adults and youth with regard to Penance, including a
small, user-friendly brochure that can be distributed to all the
faithful which will offer a step-by-step guide to Confession and a
wallet-sized card with the Act of Contrition on it.
The Sacrament of
Reconciliation, Archbishop Wuerl writes, “is the story of God’s love
that never turns away from us. It endures even our shortsightedness and
selfishness. Like the father in the parable of the prodigal son, God
waits, watches, and hopes for our return every time we walk away.”
