TERZA DOMENICA DI QUARESIMA
I profeti dell’Antico Testamento avevano costantemente richiamato agli
THIRD SUNDAY OF LENT
The rules that control our destiny are simple: “We must love God above
all and our neighbor as ourselves.” If we just try to do that at every
“now” that is given to us, we need not worry about what will happen to
us at the end of our time. Just as our virtuous loving in this life has
drawn us towards God, so in eternity that same love will unite us to God
forever. But like the barren fig tree in today’s gospel story, we cannot
waste the time left to us to bear the fruit of praiseworthy love that
will ensure our eternal happiness. Our end is coming and Jesus is
waiting for us on the other side of death. Whether we will join him then
is up to us NOW.

He said to them in
reply, "Do you think that because these Galileans suffered in this way
they were greater sinners than all other Galileans? By no means! But I
tell you, if you do not repent, you will all perish as they did!" - Lk
13:2-3
LAITY EMPOWERMENT AND PARTICIPATION
Recent surveys of
Catholics 40 and 50 years old reveal that the laity is ready for a more
participatory church and greater lay involvement.
This need of the Church in the United States today is met by the special
charism of Catholic priesthood.
A charism, reminds us of Eugene Lauer of the National Pastoral Life
Center, is a gift given to a person (s) by the Spirit for the sake of
the whole community. Ministry is a gift not given directly to individual
priests, but to the whole ministering church. This framing leads to a
fresh description of the role of the priest.
Two significant issues influencing the role of the priest in the U.S.
church today are the declining number of priests and the
merging/clustering of Catholic parishes. These developments challenge us
“to understand the ordained priesthood primarily within the context of
the entire priesthood of the faithful. We must view the ordained priest
as a minister among ministers. He is the one who gathers the community
by preaching and teaching the Word, and then inspires/leads/empowers the
people of the parish to share in ministry with their own special
ministries: ministries to youth, religious education, social service,
liturgical music, etc. The priest plants the word of God in the
community as the seed for these special gifts and oversees their growth
in the community.
The priest is not the one who does the entire ministry, but is the
leader who draws out the best ministering gifts from all the faithful.”
