SIXTH SUNDAY OF EASTER
In today’s first reading, those debating about the conditions under which fellowship could be extended to Gentiles reached a compromise about things that would prevent Jewish and Gentile Christians from sitting at table together. To settle a divisive issue, the apostles and elders of the church met and talked. They preserved the unity and completeness of the community symbolized in Revelation’s vision of the holy city. The church, as the apostles showed us, offers an alternative to hyper communication: communion – the encounter of people with one another in spirit, mind, and body in the best “network” of all, the Body of Christ.

"Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give it to you. Do not let your hearts be troubled or afraid. You heard me tell you, 'I am going away and I will come back to you.' If you loved me, you would rejoice that I am going to the Father; for the Father is greater than I." - Jn 14:27-28

THE EUCHARIST
Sacrament of Charity

In our ongoing efforts to build each other up into a better community, we can rely on the Eucharist, which is both the “source and summit” of our spiritual life, as Pope Benedict XVI states in his Apostolic Exhortation, “The Sacrament of Charity.” In it he urges us to rediscover this source of energy in order to transform our lives.

• In his death on the Cross, Jesus redeemed us from evil and death.

• In the Eucharist Jesus does not give us a “thing” but himself.

• Through his gift of the Eucharist, Jesus gives us the means of transformation through which “we become sharers of God’s inmost life.” This union with Christ, brought about by our Communion with Him, permeates our entire life.

• The Eucharist energizes our lives and serves as the root of our global community as Catholics. As members of this one Church, with a common mission and common goal rooted in the Eucharist, we go forth as one body to make a difference in the world.

Participating in the Sunday liturgy not only “is demanded by our Christian conscience” but also “forms that conscience.” Sunday is to be set aside as a holy day, “a new way of experiencing time, relationships, work, life, and death,” centered around the celebration of the Eucharist. Setting aside Sunday gives new meaning to both work and rest, keeps us from being enslaved by our work, and fosters our being present to one another.

Through the Eucharist, we meet the risen Christ, living today in the mystery of the Church, his Body, fulfilling the promise he made to be “with you always until the end of the world.”

HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY!
Today we celebrate Mother’s Day around the world. Our heartfelt best wishes to all mothers of our parish together with our grateful prayers for all our mothers who preceded us to our real homeland. Also, all Mother’s Day envelopes with your mother’s name will be placed on the Main Altar throughout the month of May.

WE CONGRATULATE THE CHILDREN who are receiving their 1st Holy Communion today at the 9:00 a.m. Mass. Children and their families are welcome to Casa Italiana after Mass for refreshments.

REMEMBER YOUR EASTER DUTY!
The second precept of the Church (“You shall confess your sins at least once a year”) ensures preparation for the Eucharist by the reception of the sacrament of reconciliation, which continues baptism’s work of conversion and forgiveness.

The third precept (“You shall humbly receive your Creator in Holy Communion at least during the Easter season”) guarantees as a minimum the reception of the Lord’s Body and Blood in connection with the Pascal feast, the origin and center of the Christian liturgy. The Easter season ends with the conclusion of Vespers on Pentecost Sunday, May 27, 2007.

THE SECOND COLLECTION NEXT SUNDAY is for the Catholic Relief Services. This collection makes possible the American Catholic Church’s global mission to combat poverty, provide relief and development, assist refugees and immigrants, and advocate for justice and peace in situations of conflict and neglect of basic human rights. Thank you for your generous support.
