TWENTY-EIGHTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
“Your faith has saved you.” These words of Jesus to the Samaritan leper
he healed in today’s Gospel could go out as well to other “unclean”
people who came to wholeness through Jesus: the woman healed of a
hemorrhage and the “sinner” at the Pharisee’s house.
It seems being on the outside is no bar to salvation, for those who
believe in the one who can bring them back.

Jesus said in reply,
"Ten were cleansed, were they not? Where are the other nine? Has none
but this foreigner returned to give thanks to God?" Then he said to him,
"Stand up and go; your faith has saved you." - Lk 17:17-19
THE GRACE OF THE
ROSARY
One prays the Rosary when
he or she receives the grace, wrote recently David Reed. The Rosary,
then, becomes the bridge between our faith and how we practice it. For
many the Rosary is such a bridge. As a tool of contemplation, praying
the Rosary invites one to place the template of our lived experience
along side the template of the Gospel story. The Rosary could be seen as
a way to own the claim of the kingdom, a claim that ultimately cries out
for a world shaped by social justice. The Rosary is no flight from the
world but a way to engage challenges from an experience of Christ,
broken down bite-size into the mysteries of Jesus’ life, death and
resurrection. The Rosary is basically centered on Christ, and we are led
to contemplate Christ and his meaning for our lives today by no less a
skilled contemplative than Mary.
The recitation of the
Rosary promotes biblical spirituality – a making of one’s own the
mysteries of our religion, an absorption in story, symbol, and practice
of the tenets of the Nicene or Apostles’ Creed, transforming our
identity. Spirituality is saying “yes” to the truths of our faith in a
way that gives substance and shapes the interiority of our lives – a
making one’s own of the faith that reaches way beyond the head into the
heart, the feelings, into the way one views one’s world that touches
affectively every relationship that we have and that we are.
Without connecting all
these components of our human existence, how can anyone make heads and
tails in this world today? There needs to be a coherence between life
lived on the outside – what we do and say – and the life we live on the
inside – what we think and feel. The person praying the Rosary develops
the emotional connections between the template of our contemporary
experience, in both its joys and struggles, and the template of the
story revealed in the recitation of the Rosary. The Rosary is a series
of interactions with the people who make up the storey, and bonding with
them becomes, over time a trusted relationship.
Errata Corrige - We regret the error in last Sunday Program for
the 10:30 Mass: The beautiful statue of Our Lady of the Rosary,
blessed by Archbishop Donald Wuerl, was donated by Mrs. Veronica
Nobilio (not Crupi) in memory of her husband Arturo Nobilio.
Our sincere apologies to Mrs. Veronica Nobilio.
