THIRTY-THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
The vocabulary of violence permeates today’s readings. In the first
reading flames will consume the proud and evildoers. The Gospel speaks
of wars, earthquakes and persecutions.
Yet the first reading ends with the assurance that there will arise the
sun of justice. Jesus in the Gospel tells us, “Do not be afraid… not a
hair on your head will be destroyed.” To the centuries old question
about the definite date of the end of the world Jesus replied, “By your
perseverance you will secure your lives.” We call it “hanging in there.”
convinzione.

CELEBRATING
THANKSGIVING BY SHARING
On Thursday, November 22nd,
we’ll give thanks for the good things in our lives – family, friends,
health, livelihood – and to see those good things as blessings, that is,
to offer thanks for them to God. Of course not everyone has these things.
“Every day in our community
and in communities nationwide, children wake up wondering where their next
meal will come from. Food insecurity, homelessness and poverty are
prevalent even in the midst of our affluent society. In fact, nearly
one-third of the children in our nation’s capital are from families with
earnings below the federal poverty threshold.
Catholic social teaching,
grounded in the Gospel, calls to respond to the least among us with the
greatest of love, calls us to face the challenge of creating a society
that is without poverty and where all children have the opportunity to
grow up in healthy, strong households and meet their fullest potential.
The collection for the Catholic Campaign for Human Development, taken up
on November 18, 2007, is an excellent opportunity to respond to this
Gospel call and help make families stronger.
For over 30 years,
contributions to the Catholic Campaign for Human Development by
parishioners like you throughout the United States have made it possible
to create permanent solutions to the causes of poverty. For example, last
year, nearly $9 million supported 326 projects in 47 states, the District
of Columbia and Puerto Rico. Here in the Archdiocese of Washington, the
Life Skills Workshop received a grant to support its important work of
assisting women as they move from incarceration into productive community
members. When parents become employed or get better jobs, children’s lives
improve.
Real, sustainable change
that brings hope to our families and builds a stronger community for
everyone is happening because of the support from parishioners like you.
Thank you for your continued generosity.”
(Msgr. Barry Knestout, Vicar
for Administration, Archdiocese of Washington).
