THIRTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
In today’s Gospel Jesus calls disciples. They are not only called but are challenged. It isn’t any different for us today. We are called, and answering the call has its difficulties – and its rewards. And as followers of Jesus we are called to an exclusive dedication to Jesus, to be faithful each day of our Christian life. Jesus calls us to be conformed to himself. He asks us to live with our families, at work, at school, in our community, seeing with the eyes of God – seeing what is right in front of us that need doing in God’s service. We are all called to this together.

As they were proceeding on their journey someone said to him, "I will follow you wherever you go." Jesus answered him, "Foxes have dens and birds of the sky have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to rest his head." - Lk 9:57-58

US CATHOLICS AND AMERICAN IMMIGRATION POLICY

We as Catholics have an enormous stake in the current debates about United States immigration policy. Nonetheless, as a community we experience all of the divisions that characterize the national debate.

Los Angeles Cardinal Roger M. Mahony on May 8 at the Fifth Annual John M. Templeton Jr. Lecture on Economic Liberties and the Constitution at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia, called current immigration laws unjust and said that “from the Catholic perspective, the ultimate question in the immigration debate is whether we want to live in a society that accepts the toil of undocumented workers with one hand and then treats them like criminals with the other.” The cardinal pointed out that there are many jobs to be filled in the U.S. economy, but immigration laws do not mirror this need. He stated that 90 percent of the nearly 500,000 unauthorized immigrants who enter the U.S. each year find jobs within six months, but only 5,000 immigrant visas are available each year. Cardinal Mahony restated the U.S. church’s call for comprehensive immigration reform, one that grants legal status and a chance at permanent residency for undocumented people currently in the U.S. as well as the opportunity for future migrant workers to “enter, depart and re-enter the country safely and legally.”

“We accept their labor, their separation from family, their taxes…, yet we do not offer the undocumented population the protection of our laws.”

WE WELCOME INTO THE CHURCH Lena Marie Harms, daughter of Erik Lind and Isabella (Fiorentino) Harms; Dasean Christopher Jones, Jr., son of Dasean C. and Abigail (Battad) Jones; and Luca Alessandro Mariggio, son of Enrico and Giovanna (Ventresca) Mariggio, who were baptized in our Church on June 24, 2007.

TODAY WE HONOR ST. MARIA GORETTI at the 9:00 a.m. Mass. The Mass intention, the flowers, the prayer cards, the bread and wine and this week sanctuary lamp were donated in honor of St. Maria Goretti, whose liturgical feast day is July 6, by Richard Goetzinger.

THE SECOND COLLECTION TODAY is for the Renovation Fund. Please, be generous.

WEDNESDAY, JULY 4, IS INDEPENDENCE DAY: a national holiday. The parish and school offices will be closed and there will be noonday Mass. We live in a world that suffers from an absence of peace, because we often move away from God’s peaceful presence. On July 4th we pray for our nation and for all nations of the world, especially those who suffer from the violence of war, that peace may be restored for the sake of all.
Happy Fourth of July!

NEXT SUDNAY, JULY 8, FESTA ITALIANA 2007 will be held at Casa Italiana, Holy Rosary Church and Third Street & F, NW. Join us at the opening 12:00 noon Mass, followed by a brief procession to the National Enforcement Officers Memorial. The Festa this year will feature the delicious food and culture of the Emilia-Romagna Region. Some of the things you will be able to enjoy are authentic Emilia Romagna food, beer, wine and other beverages, gelato, cultural presentations, and entertainment for adults and children. The grand raffle prize will be a beautiful villa for one week in Italy that sleeps 11 people for the winner. There will be so many other fine prizes raffled off.
Come, join the fun!

NEXT MONDAY, JULY 9, 2007, the restoration of the interior of Holy Rosary Church will begin and should be completed around August 17, 2007. During this period of five weeks Mass will be celebrated in Casa Italiana, and we will gather in the Lower Church Hall for our social hour. We apologize for any inconvenience due to the restoration work.

ITALIAN AMERICAN GOLF TOURNAMENT

The 34TH Annual Italian American Golf Tournament, sponsored by the Lido Civic Club of Washington, will be held this year on Monday, September 17, 2007 at Falls Road Golf Course in Potomac, Maryland.

Registration including coffee, donuts and free driving range use will begin at 8:00 AM with a scheduled 9:00 am tee off time.

All are invited to play – this year we hope to attract more women golfers. Remember, you do not have to be a “great” golfer to participate, since each foursome plays a ‘best ball’ format. All players receive a logo golf shirt and other goodies -- plus prizes awarded for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place, longest drives, closest to the pin, over 80 raffle prizes, snack at the turn, and a full lunch buffet including Lasagna and Italian sausages. Last year the 50/50 prize was $750 to the winner!

All of the proceeds from the Golf Tournament benefit the Lido Civic Club’s scholarship and charity accounts and the Casa Italiana Cultural Center in Washington, DC.

Golfers should contact the Tournament Committee Member Tony Falcone at 301.422.2393.
Holy Rosary volunteers to help at registration should contact Gino Marinucci at 301.942.2266.
