THIRD SUNDAY OF EASTER
In today’s gospel Jesus questions Peter about his love for Him. Jesus has his own definition. Love is as love does; love is shown in action. Love is practical and it is a hard taskmaster. It takes us where we would rather not go and stretches us to do things that make us cringe in fear. Elsewhere in the gospel, Jesus insists that love means a willingness to lay down one’s life for others. Jesus’ final words to Peter are a terse “Follow me!” Love will take Peter to Rome where he will lose his life for the sake of his fidelity to the gospel. Most of us will not be called to such an extreme form of martyrdom. But everyone is called to the martyrdom, that is, the witness of love. Thai is living and acting as if the well-being and happiness of others is at least as important as our own. There is no greater witness than this.

Jesus said to them, "Come, have breakfast." And none of the disciples dared to ask him, "Who are you?" because they realized it was the Lord. Jesus came over and took the bread and gave it to them, and in like manner the fish. - Jn 21:12-13

OUR PREJUDICES

Witnessing this past week the Don Imus meltdown, caused by his long history of racist, sexist and homophobic remarks, made us reflect how often we too played a part in the performance he carried too far.

Actor and playwright Harvey Fienstein in The New York Times Op-Ed of April 13, 2007, rightly observed that “all kind of prejudices exist in the human heart. Some are harmless; some not so harmless. But we need to understand who we are if we wish to change.

I urge you to look around, or better yet, listen around and become aware of the prejudice in everyday life. We are so surrounded by expressions of intolerance that I am in shock and awe that anyone noticed all these recent high-profile instances. Still, I’m gladdened because our no longer being deaf to them may signal their eventual eradication.

The real point is that you cannot harbor malice toward others and then cry foul when someone displays intolerance against you. Prejudice tolerated is intolerance encouraged. Rise up in righteousness when you witness the words and deeds of hate, but only if you are willing to rise up against them all, including your own. Otherwise suffer the slings and harrows of disrespect silently.”

Prejudice and racism is not a sin of a single individual or a single ethnic group. It affects all Americans. This is why we must remain sensitive to the concerns of all citizens. We have an obligation to reject explicitly racist, intemperate, irrational or inflammatory accusations, no matter what their source may be. The sin of racist behavior must be identified, named, and then eliminated from our lives, personally and collectively, because it is the denial of the essential quality of all human beings, created in the image of God.

WE WELCOME INTO THE CHURCH Giuseppe Antonio Covello, son of Andrea and Marlene (Miranda) Covello, who was baptized in our Church on April 15, 2007. Also on April 15, 2007, the Rite of the Sacrament of Baptism was completed for Matthew, Christian and Nicholas Scopelliti, children of Joseph Donato and Allison (MacDonald) Scopelliti, who had been previously baptized at the hospital.

OUR CASA ITALIANA LANGUAGE SCHOOL begins its Spring/Summer Session today. Classes to learn the Italian language are being offered at all levels. Besides the language, courses in Italian literature, ceramics, mosaics and cooking are also offered. For more information, please pick up a brochure in the back of the church or in Casa Italiana. You may also call the School at (202)638-1348 or visit the web site: www.CasaItalianaSchool.org.

THE PADRE PIO PRAYER GROUP meets this Saturday, April 28, 2007. Rosary begins at 10:45 a.m. followed by Mass at 11:00 a.m. All are welcome!

THE SECOND COLLECTION NEXT SUNDAY is for the Catholic Home Missions. There are many places in America – Appalachia, the Deep South, the Southwest and the Rocky Mountain states – where the Catholic Church struggles just to keep parishes open and to educate children in the faith. Many dioceses are short of priests, sisters and the money needed to run their parishes. Last year, Catholic Home Missions gave more than $3 million to the dioceses along the Gulf Coast devastated by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, but many poor dioceses still need our help. Through the Appeal, we have the opportunity to help protect and preserve our Catholic community here in the United States.
