SIXTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
Much has been written about the presumed conflict, personified by Martha and Mary in today’s Gospel, between action and contemplation, Christian service and prayer.
This month and the next find more people on their annual vacation than at any other time of the year. For many their vacation provides an opportunity to just rest and relax in quiet and solitude. We should use these days to refresh and intensify our prayer life. While there are many different ways to pray, one of the best ways is to do as Mary did -- to simply put ourselves in the presence of Jesus, looking intently at him and listening to him speak to our hearts.

POPE’S LETTER ON TRIDENTINE MASS

By Cindy Wooden
Catholic News Service

Here at a glance are the central points of Pope Benedict XVI’s July 7 letter and norms for the wider celebration of the Tridentine Mass using the Roman Missal of 1962. The norms take effect Sept. 14:

  • The current Roman Missal, published after the Second Vatican Council, continues to be the “ordinary’ form for celebrations of Mass in the Latin rite Church. The 1962 missal is now considered the “extraordinary” form of the Mass.

  • Any priest can celebrate Mass in private using the 1962 missal, except for the Mass of the Lord’s Supper on Holy Thursday, the Good Friday commemoration of the Lord’s Passion and the Easter Vigil, which always must be celebrated with a congregation.

  • Catholic laypeople may attend a priest’s private Mass using the 1962 missal.

  • If a recognized group of Catholic laity asks its parish priest to celebrate Mass according to the 1962 missal, he should do so. The 1962 missal can be used for Mass on any weekday, but no more than one Tridentine Mass should be celebrated in a given parish on Sundays.

  • The 1962 missal can be used for baptisms, weddings, funerals and anointing of the sick, if the faithful request it.

  • Even when the 1962 missal is being used, the readings can be proclaimed in the local language using a Lectionary, or book of Mass readings, recognized by the Vatican.

  • If a parish priest refuses laypeople’s request for celebration of the Tridentine Mass, the laypeople should turn to their bishop for assistance. If the bishop has difficulty fulfilling their request, he should seek advice and help from the Pontifical Commission Ecclesia Dei, which is responsible for coordinating pastoral care to Catholics attached to the Tridentine Mass.

  • Bishops may celebrate the Sacrament of Confirmation using the rite that was in effect in 1962; the rite is found in a book called the “Roman Pontifical.”

THE SECOND COLLECTION TODAY is for the Church in Latin America. The proceeds from this collection go to support the work of pastoral projects in Mexico, Central and South America and the Caribbean. When we contribute to this fund, we actively participate in the work of solidarity with our brothers and sisters throughout the American hemisphere to help build One Church, One America.

DURING THE SUMMER SEASON attending Mass on Sunday is still mandatory and your weekly offering is still needed to meet current expenses as we approach the end of the fiscal year on August 31st. Your regular support for each of the fifty-two weeks of the year is very much needed. Thank You!

ITALIAN AMERICAN GOLF TOURNAMENT

The 34TH Annual Italian American Golf Tournament, sponsored by the Lido Civic Club of Washington, will be held this year on Monday, September 17, 2007 at Falls Road Golf Course in Potomac, Maryland.
Registration including coffee, donuts and free driving range use will begin at 8:00 AM with a scheduled 9:00 am tee off time.

All are invited to play – this year we hope to attract more women golfers. Remember, you do not have to be a “great” golfer to participate, since each foursome plays a ‘best ball’ format. All players receive a logo golf shirt and other goodies -- plus prizes awarded for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place, longest drives, closest to the pin, over 80 raffle prizes, snack at the turn, and a full lunch buffet including Lasagna and Italian sausages. Last year the 50/50 prize was $750 to the winner!

All of the proceeds from the Golf Tournament benefit the Lido Civic Club’s scholarship and charity accounts and the Casa Italiana Cultural Center in Washington, DC.

Golfers should contact the Tournament Committee Member Tony Falcone at 301.422.2393.
Holy Rosary volunteers to help at registration should contact Gino Marinucci at 301.942.2266.
