FIFTH SUNDAY OF LENT
To his opponents’ trick question regarding the adulterous woman, Jesus
responds by recasting the question and turning it back to his
questioners. Jesus brings to light what this conversation is really
about: not the guilt of the adulterous woman, but whether he is indeed
the Son of God. He concludes with a devastating query of his own: The
one to throw the first stone, the witnesses, according to the law,
should be those who are without sin themselves -- that is, no one.
|

Then Jesus straightened up and said to
her, "Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?" She replied, "No
one, sir." Then Jesus said, "Neither do I condemn you. Go, and from now
on do not sin any more." - Jn 8:10-11
PARISH ETIQUETTE AT MASS
There may be times when we arrive late,
are unprepared, are dressed inappropriately or forget to silence some
electronic device we’ve brought. Sometimes our children will be too
noisy or fidgety. And accidents happen. How we act on such occasions is
part of etiquette; but in the main etiquette concerns habits, not the
rare slip or unavoidable occurrence.
Everyone who worships wholeheartedly and without needless distraction
will appreciate the cultivation of good parish etiquette. All it takes
is charity and practice.
• Preparing for Liturgy: Schedule liturgy into the family or household
weekend activities.
• Dressing appropriately: Err on the side of dressing up, not down;
presume that most people will wear their best, most appropriate clothing
and do likewise.
• Arriving: Greet others as you arrive. Turn off any pagers, watch
alarms, or cell phones. If Mass has already begun, choose an appropriate
time to join the assembly, such as during a song. If you need to leave
early, move at a time when the assembly is also in motion.
• Our children at Mass: Children are welcome at Mass! Children need to
be part of worship to learn how to worship. Remind young children of
what is good and proper behavior just before entering the church.
• Fostering Hospitality: All etiquette is based on hospitality. Since
parish liturgy is about extending the Lord’s hospitality to others,
etiquette must reflect the inclusiveness of the kingdom Jesus described
in the gospels and welcome strangers and guests.
