TWENTY-FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
Who will be saved? Isaiah tells us that the Lord does not exclude anyone but gathers all the nations. In the letter to the Hebrews we are told not to lose heart. We all suffer in life.
Jesus suffered too. As with Jesus, God is always with us. Everyone is welcome in God’s house. Jesus died to save all people. What will our credentials be that will let us into God’s banquet? We have to remember that we are all brothers and sisters made in God’s image and that we must treat each other like beloved brothers and sisters.

"People will come from the east and the west and from the north and the south and will recline at table in the kingdom of God. For behold, some are last who will be first, and some are first who will be last." - Lk 13:29-30

CATHOLIC SELF-IDENTITY

The term “Catholic” includes a variety of individuals who may be part of different groups and movements. But how does the Catholic laity define their Catholic identity? Four sociologists at Catholic University asked this question in a national survey and their results are reported in the book, American Catholics Today: New Realities of their Faith and their Church. More than three-quarters of the respondents said that helping the poor, the resurrection of Jesus from the dead, the sacraments (in some versions it was “the real Presence of Jesus in the Eucharist”), and Mary the Mother of Jesus were “very important.” At the bottom of the list was abortion, teaching authority, death penalty and celibate male clergy.

In reviewing the book, Andrew M. Greeley observed that these components of identity – which are really important to Catholics – are festival days: the Annunciation, Christmas, Holy Thursday, and Easter. They are pictures but also narratives – Nazareth, Bethlehem, the Upper Room, the Last Judgment. They are the raw material from which theology and creed are shaped, the cement that holds the community together and the age-old stories constituting the deep roots of the rain forest that is the Catholic heritage. After two thousands years and the devastation of many crises, the Catholic respondents knew what is absolutely essential in their religion – Jesus risen, the poor, Mary and the sacraments.

These key stories and symbols are invincible resources for the church’s work of evangelization, especially among the young. Catholicism must invest more money and more personnel in work with teens and young adults.
