PENTECOSTE

PENTECOST
The Pentecost event is the completion of the Easter event. At Easter we celebrate the return of Jesus to the disciples in another form. His post-resurrection presence is different from his previous presence. The work of the Holy Spirit is what creates this new presence in the world by forming the Body of Christ. The Body of Christ that S. Paul describes is not a stand-in for Christ but is Christ himself in another form. This is made clear in today’s gospel when Jesus delegates to the disciples the power to forgive sins. Consequently, there is not further need f Jesus’ physical presence in the world because he is present physically in and through his Body, that is, in and through us. We are the hands, the eyes, the feet of Jesus.

"If you love me, you will keep my commandments. I have told you this while I am with you. The Advocate, the Holy Spirit that the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything and remind you of all that I told you." - Jn 14:15, 25-26

BLESSED JOHN BAPTIST SCALABRINI

Blessed John Baptist Scalabrini died on June 1, 1905. After 102 years, the founder of the Congregation of the Missionaries of St. Charles or Scalabrinians, who have been staffing Holy Rosary Church since 1960, is still a dynamic presence in the field of migration – a global issue affecting most countries of the world today.

Scalabrinians, who were founded in 1887, today number over 800 and they care for the spiritual, social and legal concerns of migrants in 29 countries in all five continents. Blessed Scalabrini founded the Missionary Sisters of St. Charles in 1894 and convinced St. Frances Cabrini in 1889 to come to America to minister to Italian immigrants.

Blessed Scalabrini was led by his missionary spirit to care for all people who find themselves in the situation of real migrants. His global vision took concrete form, as a kind of spiritual last will, in his plan presented to Pope St. Pius X in 1904, to set up in the Roman Curia a Commission for all Catholic migrants.

Few bishops can match the work done by Blessed John Baptist Scalabrini, who was called the Apostle of the Catechism and Father to the migrants. At his beatification ceremony in St. Peter’s Square on Nov. 9, 1997, Pope John Paul II said that Blessed John Baptist Scalabrini intensely lived the paschal mystery by “serving the poor and crucified Christ in the many needy and suffering people whom he loved.”
