THIRTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
In today’s Gospel Jesus is talking to the Pharisees, “who were convinced of their own virtue and despised everyone else.” In the parable the tax collector left the temple justified, while the Pharisee did not. Why? Because the Pharisee compares himself to others and he condemns them. As a consequence, he did not go home justified. How different from the tax collector from whose lips Jesus has given us one of the most powerful and beautiful short prayers found in the New Testament: “O God, be merciful to me a sinner.” His humility and willingness to admit that he had sinned has brought about his forgiveness.

"The tax collector stood off at a distance and would not even raise his eyes to heaven but beat his breast and prayed, 'O God, be merciful to me a sinner.' I tell you, the latter went home justified, not the former; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and the one who humbles himself will be exalted." - Lk 18:13-14

PORNOGRAPHY AWARENESS WEEK

This year from October 28 to November 4 people throughout our nation will be participating in “The White Ribbon Against Pornography” (WRAP) campaign during Pornography Awareness Week to express their concern for and protest against increasing obscenity in our nation and for personal renewal and commitment to the virtue of chastity. You are invited to join the WRAP Campaign or in some other way to express your concern.

The fact that pornography is a serious problem and it is affecting youth, marriages, and family life is clear. Each year 40 million U.S. adults regularly visit Internet pornography websites. 47% of Christians say that pornography is a major problem in the home. The average age of the first exposure to Internet pornography is 8; and teens are the largest consumer.

Also, thousands of women and children are brought to countries, including the United States, against their wishes as victims of human sexual trafficking. More than half of these victims are children who are often exploited for sexual purposes, including prostitution, pornography and sex tourism. Your help to raise awareness in the community to this modern slavery can save lives.

Helpful Suggestions to Protect your Family

• Spend family time together at meals, recreation, leisure
• Pray together daily on a regular basis
• Be aware that pornography destroys marriages and hurt families
• Monitor TV programs and music
• Set limits on computer use and use filter software
• Keep the computer in a visible place in the house
• Monitor cell phone and iPOD use
• Eliminate chat rooms; they can be dangerous, especially for children
• Select appropriate video games, books, magazine, and movies for the family.
