FOURTH SUNDAY OF EASTER
In today’s Gospel, Jesus reminds us that God is greater than all and in the end it is God’s will that prevails. Our inability to remember this at all times and in all situations is a source of many of our difficulties. Those who belong to Jesus resonate with his words. They “recognize” him as the one sent from God and they follow. Jesus assures them that they will not be denied, for there is no power that can snatch them away from God. There are many ways of hearing the voice of Jesus, and for some this may involve being a Christian in a formal sense. But there are many others who will hear the call of the heart -- the call of compassionate, loving and just living – and who will respond according to their own lights. They, too, will not be denied. It is of utmost importance that we hear and live the message of Jesus. To hear him is to hear God. For Jesus and the Father are one. Jesus calls us to the same unity through the gift of the Spirit.

"I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish. No one can take them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one can take them out of the Father's hand." - Jn 10:28-29

DEMOCRACY AND SECULARISM

“It seems a battle has arisen between our older notion of a civic pluralism accommodating the religious beliefs of the vast majority of Americans on the one hand and, on the other hand, an aggressive secularism that seems quite intent on eliminating any religiously motivated idea, speech or action in civic and intellectual life,” Cardinal Francis George of Chicago said Feb. 13 in a speech on democracy and religion at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. The Cardinal said, “Our religious traditions must recognize certain things as beyond their competence. But at the same time, the properly secular society has to be sober in its recognition that it exists under God, firm in its understanding that fundamental truths, many of them religious in nature, undergird its very existence.” He stated that in many cases religion has been an instrument for secularization in America, with Jews showing one need not be Christian to be American and Catholics showing one need not be Protestant to be American. He cautioned that in a secular society the common good can lose out to the desire for individual rights and that Americans run the risk of replacing religion with a glorification of the state: “National symbols can easily pass from demanding our respect and even affection to commanding our ultimate loyalties; but a nation is never a church, much less an object of worship.”

Cardinal George concludes by asking, “What kind of democracy leads to secularism? Ours, if it reduces the realm of human freedom in the name of individual civil rights. What kind of democracy protects freedom? Ours, if it limits itself to its properly secular purposes.”

WE WELCOME INTO THE CHURCH Elenoire and Marsel Leone, children of Marco and Tina Clara (Pistacchio) Leone; and Colin Ryan Sullivan, son of Erik and Theresa Lynn (Farley) Sullivan, who were baptized in our Church on April 22, 2007.

THE SECOND COLLECTION TODAY is for the Catholic Home Missions. There are many places in America – Appalachia, the Deep South, the Southwest and the Rocky Mountain states – where the Catholic Church struggles just to keep parishes open and to educate children in the faith. Many dioceses are short of priests, sisters and the money needed to run their parishes. Last year, Catholic Home Missions gave more than $3 million to the dioceses along the Gulf Coast devastated by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, but many poor dioceses still need our help. Through the Appeal, we have the opportunity to help protect and preserve our Catholic community here in the United States.

NEXT SUNDAY, May 6, 2007 at the 10:30 Mass we will celebrate the May Feast of Our Lady of Pompei with Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament and recitation of the Suppplica. After the Church celebration, refreshments will be served a t Casa Italiana, compliments of Biagio Carannante.

THE SECOND COLLECTION NEXT SUNDAY IS FOR THE RENOVATON FUND. The restoration of the interior of our Church will begin July 9, 2007.
