TWENTY-SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
In or world today the temptation is to be bigger and better, richer
and better-known than our neighbor or the person sitting next to us. We
often want the biggest and the best and we want to be known as the same.
But do fame and fortune necessarily bring happiness? Sirach tells us
that if we conduct our affairs with humility we will be loved more than
a giver of gifts, and we will find favor with God. Being humble doesn’t
mean debasing yourself or deliberately thinking you are the worst of all
persons. We are all made in God’s image. And God loves us all; being
humble means being honest about ourselves and our gifts. We have these
gifts because of grace -- in some cases hard work too, but God has
graced us, and that is a pure gift.
A tutti quei benpensanti Gesù chiede
di modificare le loro liste di invitati e di convocare i poveri.
|

"Rather, when you hold a
banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind; blessed
indeed will you be because of their inability to repay you. For you will
be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous."
Lk 14:13-14
A CONSISTENT ETHIC OF LIFE
Leading a consistent ethical
life is one of the principal concepts in Cardinal Bernardin’s thought. He
gives us two reasons for personal commitment to such a life – it helps us
overcome obstacles that we encounter daily and it provides an enlarged
value of our moral vision.
Nuclear war, abortion, capital punishment, and euthanasia are impending
threats to life. A consistent ethical life manifests the positive
potential of the Catholic moral and social tradition. It calls for
positive legal action to prevent the killing of the unborn and to promote
human dignity through programs for nutrition, health care and housing.
Each one of us is called to give his contribution. In its four dimensions,
a consistent ethical life works to defend the integrity of moral
principles which prohibit attacks on unborn life, direct attacks on
civilians in war actions, and intentional killing of patients in nursing
homes. Cardinal Bernardin asserts that in an “ethical life” we must
examine each case individually and apply moral principles accordingly.
Catholics must express their commitment to moral principles in every day
life, and politicians must make political choices with moral principles in
mind. This is true for all public issues, from abortion to “arms racing,”
from social programs to foreign policies.
Cardinal Bernardin concludes that the church legitimately fulfills a
public role by articulating the framework for political choices by
relating such a framework to specific issues, and by calling for a
systematic moral analysis in all areas of public policies.
