THE HOLY FAMILY
Today’s Gospel tells us that soon after his birth, Jesus and his
family were refugees fleeing the violence of a brutal regime and the
dangers of bandits, the elements, and disease. But Jesus enjoyed the
supportive environment of his family and the unconditional love with which
they cared for him.
True family values cannot be legislated or imposed, for they come from
within and are only effective if they are lived out in the home. The most
important ingredient in creating an environment that is both humane and
spiritual is true love: patient and kind, forgiving, humble, and always
seeking the good of the other.

When Herod had died, behold, the angel of
the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt and said, "Rise, take the
child and his mother and go to the land of Israel, for those who sought
the child's life are dead." He rose, took the child and his mother, and
went to the land of Israel. - Mt 2:19-21

FINDING OUR WAY AGAIN
After all the Christmas and
New Year’s Day shopping rush, we are invited to “focus on spirituality and
give lots of attention to the notion of meditation and the role of silence
and stillness in our lives. While we all speak highly of these virtues and
extol them as important and necessary, our action often say otherwise. Our
lives are filled to the brim, if not overflowing, with activity. We live
with e-mail and junk mail, fax mail and voice mail, cell phones, text
messaging, pocket pagers and handheld computers.
Yet for all our involvement and connectedness, we often find ourselves
bored and restless, uncertain of just what it is we really want. We are
faced with challenges in our families, our church, the government and the
world. On any given day, most of us could probably find cause for despair
and or be easily overwhelmed into a sense of powerlessness.
Fortunately, our rich Christian heritage offers us a way out of the
confusion. Written upon every human heart is a pathway to God. An inner
voice calls us to that inner sanctuary deep within every person where we
find guidance and truth.”
We enter this holy center within ourselves through daily contemplative
prayer, which provides a healthy counterpoint to the hectic modern world.
Regular meditation is the key to breaking out of dualistic thought and
into an inner space of peace and awareness, a space to which the Spirit is
constantly inviting us were we only to listen. We must learn to listen.
Our prayer is often reduced to making announcements to God. Contemplative
prayer transforms our consciousness and our way of being human. You become
more aware of when you are upset, angry, irritated, jealous or rude. And
then you can correct it. In the silence of meditative prayer we can find
some answers to the big questions we are wrestling with: What is
community? How can a society be integrated? How do we deal with security
in a global society? How can we hope when we don’t see a future?
At the present time cultivating interior silence is kind of
countercultural for a society where many people have never experienced a
moment of silence and have no idea what their deep self is like. It’s in
silence, one develops the continuous consciousness of God and can really
hear the word of God.
