TRINITY SUNDAY
The feast of the Blessed Trinity is all about relationships. This doctrine, central to Christianity, is an explicit denial of individualism. There is no hierarchy implied in the work ascribed to each person of the Trinity. God is social and egalitarian and we are called to share in and imitate the relationships of the Trinity. We ought to abandon our pursuit for domination over one another. Each member of the human family is distinct, each given distinct qualities and mission. Therefore, there should be no separation of the human family into higher and lower levels. The doctrine of the Trinity is the basis of a new world order and greater unity in our parish community.

ITALY’S NATIONAL DAY

Every year at the beginning of June, Holy Rosary Church celebrates a Mass of Thanksgiving for its parishioners who are Italian citizens. It has also been the custom to invite members of the diplomatic corps from the Embassy of Italy in Washington, DC.

This celebration takes place at the beginning of June to commemorate the result of a referendum which occurred in Italy when the Second World War was over in Europe. The voting throughout Italy took place on June 2, 1946 when all eligible voters were asked to choose between the monarchy or the republic as a form of government. The people overwhelmingly chose the republic, which meant that the reigning king, Vittorio Emanuele III, was forced to abdicate. He did so immediately, going into exile in Portugal.

The constitutional assembly (elected officials) met on June 25, 1946 to elect a temporary head of state until a new constitution for the new republic was put together. This was promulgated on December 27, 1947. The first election of the parliament for the new republic took place on April 18, 1948, which continues to this day.

What was significant about Italy’s change of government, from monarchy to republic, was the way it was done. Tired of war, it decided to use the ballot box. And it worked. It is important for us to use, whenever possible, peaceful means to make the necessary changes we need in our own country or in other parts of the globe that look up to us and the free world to acquire the freedoms they so rightfully deserve.

THE SODALITY OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY meets today at the 9:00 a.m. Mass when the installation of Officers takes place: Gay Ferrante, Prefect; Judith Caratenuto, Vice-Prefect; Lisa DesPres, Treasurer; Mary Durso, Recording Secretary and Sharon Hughes, Corresponding Secretay. Congratulations and best wishes. A meeting will follow in the Lower Church Hall.

WE WELCOME this morning our former pastor, Father Charles Zanoni, who is back at Holy Rosary to bless the handicapped ramp, which he planned and built with great endurance, and which our parish gratefully dedicate today in his memory.

THE CATHOLIC STANDARD, HOLY ROSARY CHURCH, AND YOU!

The amount our parish of Holy Rosary assessment for the fiscal year that starts July 1 for the weekly Catholic newspaper Catholic Standard, is $2,571.50. The Catholic Standard is the first and best provider of Catholic news and information. But as of now only 12 parishioners are paid subscribers out of over 300 registered families! The above parish-plan assessment is Archbishop Wuerl’s plan to help fund this portion of the Archdiocese’s communications ministry. Having more paying subscribers would help lower our parish assessment. When YOU subscribe, that assessment amount is decreased by $18.50! Just think of all the wonderful projects and programs we could use that savings to support! Please consider becoming a Catholic Standard subscriber (Regular $35; Seniors $25) and call our parish office for your subscription as soon as possible. Thank you for your support!

2007 ARCHBISOP’S APPEAL TELEPHONE FOLLOW-UP

Each year, the Archbishop’s Appeal conducts a telephone follow-up to past donors that have not renewed in the current year. Beginning on June 11, representatives of the Appeal will be contacting past donors by telephone. If you receive a call, please consider making a generous gift to this important campaign. Thank you again to all of those who have made a pledge and are still making payments as well as to those who have completed their gifts. Your funds are critical to the Archdiocesan offices, ministries and services that receive support from this campaign.
