FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
We can hear God’s call in the ordinariness of life if we free ourselves
from fear. First, this means we must confront our own inadequacies and
sinfulness in the face of God, yet confident that God will never leave us
nor forsake us. Second, our calling as Christians is fearful because we
are confronted with giving up our agenda in order to be witnesses of God’s
agenda. Waking with Jesus and answering his call means we can no longer
dictate our daily lives. God orders our steps according to a sacred plan
that is not always evident. Finally, fear often invades the ordinariness
of life because God’s calling requires action. As Christians we must
participate with our actions in the truth of justice and righteousness
that has been made manifest in the life, death and resurrection of Jesus.

Jesus said to Simon, "Do
not be afraid; from now on you will be catching men." When they brought
their boats to the shore, they left everything and followed him. - Lk

ARCHBISHOP’S APPEAL 2007
In coming weeks, local Catholics will be asked to make a difference in
their community by generously supporting the 2007 Archbishop’s Appeal,
which provides the main source of funding for the Archdiocese of
Washington’s educational and social outreach. “This campaign allows us
together to do so many things that individually we would not be able to
accomplish,” Archbishop Donald Wuerl wrote in a letter to past appeal
supporters.
The Archbishop’s Appeal provides tuition assistance for Catholic school
students; key funding for Catholic Community Services; funding for a
variety of special ministries; funding for the education of seminarians
and for the care of retired priests.
The goal for the 2007 appeal is $11 million. Holy Rosary Church’s
financial goal for the 2007 Archbishop’s Appeal is $9,645. If all our
parishioners will participate in this appeal, a family contribution of
$50 will allow our parish to reach its goal and proudly show our
solidarity in supporting the special ministries in our Archdiocese.
Holy Rosary Church leadership for the 2007 Archbishop’s Appeal is
represented by Enrico Davoli, Geraldine Oliveto, Rebecca Gallerizzo and
Ann Marie Leali. We must put to rest some unpleasant old memories and
past failures. The Apostle Saint Paul has shown us in what our nobility
consists when he wrote, “I forget what is behind me and push on to what
lies ahead.”
So, let‘s go forward in faith!

BLESSING OF THROATS – Using candles blessed on the Feast of the
Presentation of the Lord on Feb. 2nd, throats are blessed today in
memory of St. Blase, whose feast was celebrated yesterday. St. Blase was
a bishop of Sebaste in Armenia and was martyred under the emperor
Licinius, early 4th C. Tradition that has him saving the life of a boy
with a fish bone caught in his throat is the origin of the custom of
blessing throats on this feast day. The boy’s mother is said to have
brought him food and candles when he was in prison. Thus, we use of two
candles in the throat blessing ceremony.

BENEDIZIONE DELLA GOLA
Con candele bnedette la festa della Presentazione del Signore il 2
febbraio, oggi si benedicono le gole in onore di S. Biagio, la cui festa
fu celebrata ieri. San Biagio era vescovo di Sebaste in Armenia e fu
martirizzato sotto l’imperatore Licinio all’inizio del quarto secolo. La
tradizione secondo cui egli salvo’ la vita di un bambino con una spina
di pesce piantata nella gola, diede origine al costume di benedire le
gole nella sua festa. Si dice pure che la madre del bambino porto’cibo e
candele mentre S. Biagio era in prigione. Pertanto si usano due candele
per benedire le gole.
