SECOND SUNDAY OF LENT
The hope-filled message of Christ’s transfiguration is not that Jesus will lift us up to momentary peaks of happiness in this life (though he sometimes will) but that he will live with us in the ordinary dull days of life that is our destiny just now. He will live through our flat days with us and will plunge with us into our sometimes deep valleys of sorrow. The grand message of transfiguration is that Jesus has come back from the mountain to be with us as we work out our salvation on the ordinary dull plain below.

While he was still speaking, a cloud came and cast a shadow over them, and they became frightened when they entered the cloud. Then from the cloud came a voice that said, "This is my chosen Son; listen to him." - Lk 9:34-35

HOW TO APPROACH LENT IN 2007?

During Lent we embark on a season of change -- the change we committed ourselves at our own baptism; the change we commit ourselves every time we celebrate the Eucharist: to make a sincere effort to cleanse our lives of sin and live in imitation of the Christ of the Gospel.

We have all in some way turned away from our initial commitments to ourselves, our families, our jobs and to God. The season of Lent is a time to step back for a moment and examine our hearts, so that we can rekindle our fervor and return to God and the people in our lives. In order to undergo such an existential change, we need to practice a penance that must cut to the bone and must be tailored to our own real needs.

But considering that we all live in a culture that is capitalist, consumerist and individualist -- a culture that erodes our personal life – we should choose Lenten practices that help us to reclaim ourselves as persons for a personal God. Thus, for example, even 10 minutes of solitude a day can get us in touch with ourselves; a weekly one hour walk with someone we care about would allow ourselves to be known more deeply and to feel more deeply loved; taking a public stand on an issue of justice like a fair immigration policy would make us stand against all forces that treat human beings as expendable things; visiting the handicapped, the terminally ill, those in nursing homes, people in jail or hospitals would make us realize that we are all handicapped in some ways and help us to see each other.

To resist a consumerist culture that weaves itself into every fabric of our lives, we must engage our personhood with our whole heart, our whole mind, our whole being. As the prophet Micah reminds us, “This is what Yahweh asks of you: only this, to act justly, to love tenderly and to walk humbly with your God.”
