THIRTY-FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
In today’s Gospel, Zacchaeus challenges us to “seek to see who Jesus
is,” to know Jesus better, to serve him more faithfully, and to love him
more deeply. To accept this challenge means taking time every day to
carefully and prayerfully read a page or a paragraph from one of the
gospels. We need to get more accustomed to Jesus’ words and works.
We need to make room in our hearts and minds for Jesus to stay at our
house as he stayed with Zacchaeus.
Gesù siede a tavola
con noi peccatori; e attorno alla sua mensa, diversi volti e civiltà
devono abituarsi a convivere.
|

Zacchaeus stood there and said to the
Lord, "Behold, half of my possessions, Lord, I shall give to the poor, and
if I have extorted anything from anyone I shall repay it four times over."
- Lk 19:8

THE MORAL IMPLICATIONS OF IMMIGRATION REFORM
Welcoming the stranger is an intrinsic part
of our biblical Christian heritage. Congress’ failure to overhaul
immigration laws makes it even more imperative for Christians to act. Our
laws are broken and nobody wants the blame for fixing them. We can build
fences and walls to keep people on the far side, but even the Great Wall
of China is falling down and never was much good at keeping out invaders.
How much better for people of good conscience, bound by the divine mandate
“to do justice,” to thoughtfully consider how best to create a means for
all people to share in the goodness we have received.
With this perspective, the Catholic Church does not support an
enforcement-only approach to the problem of illegal immigration, but
favors a global solution.
First, we need to examine the root causes of migration – reminded us by
Cardinal Roger Mahony at a recent immigration forum at the University of
Notre Dame in Indiana – and analyze how U. S. economic and trade policies
impact economic flight.
Second, we must comprehensively address and update the broken U. S.
immigration system.
The 12 million undocumented immigrants in the United States must be
brought out of the shadow of illegality and be given legal status. We
cannot post a no trespassing sign at our border and erect a help wanted
sign at the workplace. We cannot employ and accept the labor and taxes of
the undocumented, and then deny them the protection of the law. As a
matter of moral principle, we cannot have it both ways.
