EIGHTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
In our consumeristic society, our souls have been affected by affluenza. It is an epidemic that affects our spiritual health. The symptoms of affluenza are the compulsion and pressure we feel to acquire stuff at the expense of our spiritual well being. We believe that more and bigger are best. The media have convinced us that our lives cannot be complete and enjoyable unless we continue to acquire the stuff that fills the aisles of the supermarkets. Jesus, the source of all wisdom, is the only one who can satisfy the human heart. He knocks on the door of our hearts, asking us to let him fill our lives and hearts.

THE MISSIONARY COOPERATIVE PLAN

Every third year each parish of the Archdiocese of Washington participates in the Missionary Cooperative Plan. Since this is the year of the Plan in our parish, the applicant assigned to Holy Rosary Church for the fiscal year 2007-2008 is the Diocese of Satna in India. The Mission representative, Rev. Jose Edayadiyil, is the Mission director of the Diocese of Satna, and will make the appeal the weekend of August 12.

The diocese of Satna was given to the Vincentian congregation in 1968. Since then the Vincentians and the diocesan priest have been working in this area which comprises around 45,188 sq. km. The total population of this diocese now is 9,500,000. Out of this the number of Catholics is about 2800. There are now 56 priest 130 religious sisters and 3 religious brothers working in 27 mission stations and 17 sub stations. There are 29 major seminarians studying in different seminaries. Each year we recruit around 15 candidates for the minor seminary. We have 20 schools, 7 dispensaries, 2 hospitals, 4 orphanages, one home for the abandoned children 3 homes for mentally challenged and one home for the physically challenged children and on center for the hearing and speech impaired. We also have AID’s awareness programs. In every station we are helping the poor people with the help of caritas India and catholic relief services. We are aiming at and working for the liberation of people through evangelization and education.

We are seeking help in two areas: (1) Each year there are young people coming to our seminary. We need to support them to become missionary priests. This year we have 3 new priests and next year we will be 7. (2) Priests and sisters working in the diocese do not have sufficient means for their maintenance. We need your help to continue our work in the mission.

The Catholic Church is “missionary by her very nature.” It is from God’s love for all people that the Church in every age receives both the obligation and the vigor of her missionary dynamism. Because she believes in God’s universal plan of salvation, the Church must be missionary. This year, let us offer our prayers and financial support to the Indian Diocese of Satna. Thank You!
