TWENTY-THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
The cost of being Jesus’ disciple is high. Following Jesus is not something we can do in our spare time, or in between other activities. It cannot be simply one interest among others. Jesus Christ must come first in our lives if we are to really follow him. Count the cost, Jesus says. First reflect. Then act. So let’s reflect. If following Jesus really means putting Him first --- ahead of money, possessions, success, ahead of those we love most in this world, ahead of our very selves – which of us could say with confidence that we had the necessary amount of self-denial and perseverance? Jesus gives us his resources. Let him make you his true disciple.

"If any one comes to me without hating his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple. Whoever does not carry his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple." - Lk 14:26-27

LAY ECCLESIAL MINISTRY

Immense changes have been brought about by the evolution of lay ecclesial ministry in the Church over the past 40 years. The emergence of lay ecclesial ministry “stands out as one of the top three or four most important ministerial shifts of the past 2,000 years.”

A national symposium on lay ecclesial ministry held at St. John’s University in Collegeville, Minn., on August 1, 2007, noted three areas of pastoral concern for the future of lay ecclesial ministry:

• ensuring that all church ministry is at the service of the mission of the church
• finding a way to ensure true collaboration between the ordained and the laity, and
• mentoring the next generation of lay ecclesial ministers.

We must face these challenges by thinking really big, outside the box, in order to serve the future of the church’s mission – always faithful to the church’s tradition but also responsive to contemporary pastoral needs and situations.

In a meeting with priests of two northern Italian dioceses on July 24, 2007, Pope Benedict XVI stressed the need for priests and the laity to fully collaborate: “The parish priest retains responsibility for the totality of pastoral units entrusted to him.

He should not be reduced to being mainly and above all a coordinating bureaucrat. On the contrary, he should be the one who holds the essential reins himself but can also rely on collaborators. I believe that this is one of the important and positive results of the Council: the co-responsibility of the entire parish, for the parish priest is no longer the only one to animate everything. Since we all form a parish together, we must all collaborate and help so that the parish priest is not left on his own mainly as a coordinator, but truly discovers that he is a pastor who is backed up in these common tasks in which, together, the parish lives and is fulfilled.”
